"Our mission is to bridge and enrich the generations by fostering intergenerational understanding, communication and cooperation between the generations."

Our History

Founded in 1973, Volunteer Grandparents Society was the vision of Marjorie Walters, a social worker in Vancouver. In her work, she met numerous children and elderly people who were unable to enjoy the benefits of an extended family. She had the innovative idea of addressing this need by establishing a voluntary grandparenting program.

Our agency brings together people of grand parenting age with children who do not have the immediate presence of grandparents or older adults in their every day lives. The intention is to create a mutually beneficial relationship which resembles an extended family.

Incorporated in 1974 as a registered charity and non-profit organization, Volunteer Grandparents operates under the direction of a volunteer board and serves the Lower Mainland of BC.

Volunteer Grandparents has been a trendsetter in intergenerational relations and in the recognition of seniors in leadership roles.

The society initiates new intergenerational programming and supports existing intergenerational programs.
